An enjoyable lunch was had recently at the RACV Club. There were around 40 in the room and it was terrific to see some partners of our Old Paradians in attendance. Jacqui Jones (David), Pat Caddy (John), Kathy Mount (Pat), and Kim Nicholls (John).
Pat Mount was our Master of Ceremonies and commenced proceedings by remembering former College Captain Dennis Green (1958) who recently passed away. Pat also welcomed special guests Ben Turner, Peter Bedford (1964), and College Business Manager Paul Harris (1997).
John Nicholls was invited to update guests on Old Paradians' Association news and activities including the Parade College Foundation, our Reunion Program, and our Awards Program for 2024. John also communicated best wishes from Hall of Fame Recipient, Kevin Rickard (1953), who regrets not being able to attend these functions as he lives interstate.
Pat invited Peter Bedford (1964) to introduce the speaker for the Luncheon, Old Paradians Football Club Head Coach, Ben Turner. Peter spoke of his accidental appointment as Old Paradians Coach in 1999 and the team’s journey through that year’s B Section season losing the first 6 games and storming home to miss finals. Peter’s passion for Parade and the Old Paradians came through in extending his best wishes to Ben, the Coaching team, and the players for the season ahead in the Northern Football League.
Ben gave an excellent presentation. He outlined his football journey to date including his playing days at Greensborough Football, Under 19 and Senior Coaching at the Club, a Premiership Coach at Lower Plenty Football Club, and being part of the coaching team at the Banyule Football Club that included a Premiership in 2022. Ben has been a staff member at Parade for over 20 years and has held various roles within the Sports Department after commencing as a Trainee. Ben is currently part of the coaching panel for the College’s 1st XVIII football team which will be aiming to defend their ACC Herald Sun Shield titles this year.
Ben spoke of his football experience assisting the Club as it transitions into the NFL. He spoke of the connections to the College and the potential that exists as a result. Guests were very impressed with the coaching panel at the Club which included 5 current staff members from the College. Ben outlined the successful start to the season with a commanding win against West Heidelberg at the Garvey in front of a very large crowd, the likes of which had not been seen for many years.
Ben concluded his presentation by responding to questions from the floor.
